00 Teacher's Comments

27/11/19 - I'm going to start by being a little negative. Your research bears no relationship to your final outcomes. That needs to be something that you think about very carefully when it comes to the real thing.

That said, you presented your research really nicely and the covers are excellent. You are clearly very creative. Make sure that you really think carefully about your photography because your creativity means that you could be in line for an A star on your coursework.

20/01/20 - Firstly, please add in the 00 Teacher's Comment section to your blog so that it is easy for me to find all of the comments I have made collected in one place.

Secondly, I am VERY impressed with you Callum. Your first task was highly creative, and this second task is also creative, but in addition, shows really strong attention to detail, especially in the way you have reflected upon all of your production work. That is the best way to develop. Each task I set is designed to help you grow and the more meticulously you approach it, the more you will get out of it. Yours is excellent. Combine the photograph with the attention to layout and design and I would be surprised if you are not looking at an A star in a few months time.

Really try to think carefully about convergent elements in your music magazine task. This will be the icing on the cake for the A star.

Very well done.

??/04/20 -

Research
You noticed some really interesting things here and present well. Make sure that your research always impacts your main task and that you look even more closely when it comes to the real thing.

Magazine
The cover is good, especially the photography/image manipulation. You have not taken the same level of care with your sell lines that you did with your fashion magazine task and this does detract from the overall impact. Copy and existing piece or think very carefully about the impact of placement of sell lines. Ideally start by copying and then embellish. This is also true of your contents. You've clear put a lot of effort into this and it is impressive to see. But thin about things like columns and borders and gutters. They make an impact on the visual effectiveness of the piece.

18/25 - A little more attention to layout and design will lift this much higher.

Website
Yours is a little better than most, but still suffers somewhat from the sense that there will not be much to read in you magazine. I am not an expert on websites, but my overall impression is that they are very text dense on their home pages and that this promises more to come as we look deeper. Almost like an interactive newspaper. Photography is good, but again, copy, copy and copy some more. Embellish once you are happy that you have all the features you can/

16/25 - Room for improvement here, but lots of potential.

Convergence
Given that this was the main focus I am happy that this is what you did best. While there were several things you could have included you clearly tried to capture the sensibilities of the magazine on your website. I could feel a close connection between them.

7/10 - Still room for improvement, but very well done.

41/60 - C grade - Literally one mark away from a B grade. You should be aiming for an A or an A star in this. Well done.

PRACTICE TASK 2: Photography

Low Key Lighting -

The blue hue of the lighting in this photo wasn't intended but my group liked the outcome of the image. We used an area with only a small amount of light to create this.

High Key Lighting -

We took multiple photos using different coloured lighting and settled on pink and blue for this image.

Side Lighting -

Our group used the lighting in the photo studio and situated a light either side of our subject. It it eliminated much of the shadows in the image.

Overexposed -

This overexposed shot was poorly done as the shutter speed was set pretty slow by accident.

Shallow Depth of Field -

This portrait shallow depth of field is paired with the other shallow depth of field image and are taken in succession. We used 3 floors on a staircase and situated 2 people from our group to take the image of. I really like the the angle at which the image is taken

Deep Focus -

We struggled to get a proper deep focus shot with the camera provided to us. Instead we used a phone as it was a reliable alternative; however, the use of the phone sacrificed some quality.

Emphasis of Action -

This shot was very fun to do and I am happy with the result. If we were to do it again, I'd make sure the shutter speed is faster than it was (it was at 1/200).

Magazine Front Cover -

We decided to experiment with multiple colour filters on the lights to test different colour combinations. We settled on this image with yellow and cyan filters as we liked the contrast of warm and cold colours with cyan being the most overpowering.

Shallow Depth of Field -

This image is similar to the other shallow depth of field image but with a closer subject. The staircase causes a frame within a frame and focuses the attention on the subject in focus

Deep Focus -

This was also done by a phone as we had trouble getting a deep focus shot on the camera provided.

Long Exposure -

We went to the darkest area and slowed down the shutter speed enough so that the pair in the photo can manipulate their lights. We took multiple of these kinds of image and the effect just looks nice in general.

Image Recreation -

The lighting in our recreation is very unlike the lighting in the original image. The lighting comes from the left of the image while our image uses light from a window on the right outside the frame. We focused more on getting the pose right to match the original and got pretty close to it. As for the background we tried to find an area with as little detail in the background to just get a flat white-ish colour. In retrospect we should have used the photo studio that was available as it would have given us control over the lighting more and get a flat white background with ease.
